(18:35) Pseukei Dezimra - פסוקי דזמרה

(19:31)  Our friend Alexander Nemser says: “The Buddha himself taught the metta/lovingkindness practice to a group of disciples. The legend is that a group of monks went into a forest for a long retreat and the local spirits and "devas" there felt encroached upon so they did everything they could to scare the monks off -- terrifying images, bad smells, creepy sounds, etc. The monks came to the Buddha in fear and wanted to give up on the retreat. Instead, the Buddha taught them the metta practice. The story goes that as the monks offered kindness to themselves and other beings, the agitated forest spirits calmed down and even came around and supported their practice. In my understanding, the Buddha didn't explicitly teach that metta was an antidote to self-centeredness but that is definitely how many western practitioners experience it.”
